They can't put food back on the shelf once purchased, even if you haven't left the store. I once bought the wrong cut of steaks at Costco and didn't realize until after I checked out so I went right to customer service and they told me they would have to throw out the steaks.

The butcher at Giant recommended a completely wrong cut of meat for me once. I knew I wouldn't use it so I brought it back, still in the vacuum sealed package. They took it back no questions asked and I asked if they would put it back on the shelf and they said they were unable to sell or use any returned food.

I highly doubt it. Most reputable retailers consider the loss a cost of doing business.

Food lion got nailed a few years ago doing lots of shady stuff like this. I still get green thinking about it.

I treat all near with the chicken rule: use or freeze within two days of purchase. Buying meat 5 days before using it is gross.

Return it.

I think it does that when food in the back blocks air circulation to the food in the middle and at the front. Have had food in the front go bad faster when that happened.

So I bought a $21 pork butt roast on the 23rd thinking I might have to feed the ILs dinner on the 26th. Turns out I only had to feed them lunch so I was either going to freeze the pork butt or cook it after they left. I had looked at the sell by date which is today thinking I could still cook it today. I figured the meat would still be good since you don't always cook meat the day you buy it. So I go to put it in the crockpot today, and part of it is green and smells bad. I hate to throw $21 in the garbage. Should I try to return it and get my money back? I feel a little like it's my fault I didn't cook it right away, but they couldn't have sold it today because it's already green. So I think their sell by date was wrong, and it should still be good a few days after the sell by date. What would you do?
