OP here -- My post specifically asks for advice on what to say to my houseguest.

The problem is that I'm not that comfortable with telling another adult how to take care of basic hygiene. But I also don't want him to stink up my house.

Our holiday houseguest just walked in from a long walk, covered -- literally dripping -- with sweat, then sat down and sprawled out on my beautifully upholstered couch.
Gross!!!

I wanted to cry. Instead, I suggested that we move to the dining room so that he would at least sit on easily cleanable chairs rather than the upholstered furniture.

Why would this guy think it's OK to pollute my home? How do I politely get him to clean up and not ruin my furniture during the rest of the evening?
