We have a large, heavy, professional contraption with numerous blades that we received as a gift. I forget the brand, it's in the garage. Have used less than five times I'm ten years.. And we have an OXO that is used on at least a weekly basis and does a fantastic job.

I have a Benriner: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000VZ57C. It terrifies me, but it's great at what it does.

I now have kevlar gloves like PP mentioned. I'd suggest getting those at the same time.

I like the OXO one too. It comes with a guard, but I have a pair of Kevlar gloves for added safety.

I have an OXO one and love it. It is several years old, got it at Sur La Table.
Easy to use, sturdy, easy to clean.
