Anything is not possible. You can't get the flu from the flumist vaccine.

It's much more likely that you caught a passing flu strain than you got it from your kids' live vaccine, however, anything is possible.

Isn't a good vaccine this year. A new strain came out and it was too late to add to the vaccine. We all had the shot and caught it last week.

OP here. I was not clear. DH and I were vaccinated in September at our workplaces. We got shots. Since I read that what protects the kids asfter their flu-mist is an immune response in their nose that causes them to "shed" the virus, I wondered if that shedding could have caused DH and I to get sick since they were vaccinated just 2 weeks ago. I know they do not recommend flu-mist in those who have family members who are immune compromised, so there must be some risk. That being said, the lady at urgent care said I was her 5th positive flu swab yesterday, so it's going around. Likely a strain not in the vaccine. Praying the 3 kids escape.

This. And it's also just possible that your vaccine wasn't effective yet, yet it takes some time to develop full immunity.

It is a weakened live virus. Live viruses do have some potential to spread. If your kid develops a rash after mmr they are considered contagious, same deal. I know someone that actually got measles from their infant's vaccine reaction-confirmed by doctors.

I'm not saying I got the flu. But months ago, before any flu was going around our entire family ended up with a moderate fever and bad cold symptoms that progressed around the house after our oldest got the flu mist and developed he expected fever and runny nose. The exact same happened to a close friend, one who had laughed at me for blaming the flu shot, and her son tested positive for flu.
Yes, my son could have picked up and spread something at the doctor, but I still find it odd and think we possibly has a weakened version of the flu. The symptoms fit.

It sounds like the flu was already going around your house before the nasal spray. The vaccine takes up to 2 weeks to work, so the fact that you got it last Wednesday is negligible; it is as if you never had it for this particular virus.

It doesn't sound like your kids got the flu, so how could they have passed it on to you? We all got flu mists and no one in our house got stuffy noses, or the flu. It seems like just bad luck, since you likely got the strain that wasn't even in the shot to begin with.

OP here. I thought I said that in my post. DH, and I were both vaccinated at work. I was given a trivalent shot. I'm not sure if DH got the trivalent or quadrivalent shot. After doing some research on the CDC website, it seems both the trivalent and quadrivalent have the same 2 strains of influenza A. We likely are among the unlucky who got the A strain that is popping up that was not included in any vaccine.

My kids got the quadrivalent, 4 strain nasal vaccine the day before Thanksgiving. All 3 got stuffy as expected, my middle son actually developed an ear infection, which he has had once in his 8 years of life. (could be unreleated, but his only illness was the congestion after vaccine).
Fast forward, last Wednesday, 1 week after their vaccine, DH started to feel ill, got a high fever. I sent him to urgent care after a day, thinking "who knows maybe he got the flu". He forgot to tell them about the kids vaccine, and they felt it was likely just a virus. Gave him some cough medicine. Said they had not really been seeing flu yet. No flu swab. Fever persisted for 6 days with cold symptoms.
Yesterday morning I started to feel crummy, but no fever. Tonight, I start to get chills. Went to urgent care. Positive for Influenza A. Dh and I were both vaccinated with the trivalent shot, not the quadrivalent like the kids.
Questions
1) Think this is just a fluke, and we are among the lucky ones who get the flu, as the CDC chose the wrong strains? OR
2) What is the likelihood we got it from the kids, after their nasal vaccine as their noses started to shed virus to trigger their own response.
I am praying it is #2, because if all 3 of my kids end up with the flu AGAIN, I will lose my marbles.
