I have a beigey, but variegated regular wool rug that I got from overstock. It actually hides both the cat hair (black, white and grey) as well as being pretty cheap so if it gets trashed by the cats, I'm ok with that.

We also had pretty good luck with a jute rug, but you CANNOT get stains out of them. Even water stains, sometimes. So I'd recommend a patterned one.

Stay far away from anything Berber...we had labs and their fur wound it to the carpet - ugh it was impossible to clean! After much trial & error, we ended up with a frieze area rug. Loved it ! It was muti colored so it hid the black fur and soft on the feet .

Ones you can take to the Laundromat. I chose rugs from Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel. All have held up great with many many washings!!!

Any rug is going to attract fur/hair. I had an indoor/outdoor, but it wasn't any better and it was more difficult to vacuum.
