It also doesn't have to be a home-cooked meal. I've take people a rotisserie chicken, prepared side, salad mix and dessert that I bought from the grocery store on my way to their house, and didn't think twice about it. When you're first home with a newborn, simply not having to think about dinner is the helpful part, and they're probably too tired to notice anyway if you put together some gourmet creation.
