Just wanted to say that this is such a sweet and helpful gift idea. A 1 year old wouldn't really care about an extra gift. For the next few years they will be thrilled with a $2 pack of stickers. After they are 4-5 years old you can get them a nice book to add to their collection if you really felt like you needed to get them something extra. That way you can spend $5-10 for a tangable present and the rest for college books/living expenses etc.

Fast forward to being 30, pregnant and needing a HOUSE for the baby. Grandma's super generous mutual fund became something I repeatedly was thankful for. I still am thankful for it almost everyday. I send up thanks you to heaven and "i am so sorry for my bratty 10 year old self."

Aw this is a sweet story

Thanks all! We sent him a little fire truck. Love him. Of course now we need a game plan for future kids of theirs plus my DH's brother just had a kid and our kid is due in six weeks. So we'll have to figure something out bc otherwise this whole plan is going to get a little pricey!! I think we might just reserve a certain dollar amount that we are spending for nieces and nephews and spread it out per head. Thank goodness we have a small family!

I do think a token gift is good. At that age, they are delighted with things that cost just $5, and it shows that you are thinking of them.

My DD2 adores stickers, crayons, self-ink stamps, bath toys, Duplos, and of course books.

Another to echo how great the college fund is. My childless uncle did it for me and I'm doing it for my nephew. I appreciated it SO MUCH!! I don't out a lot aside, but it's there. I do give little gifts each year though.

No, love it. Wait until the kid is 4-5 and then send a present. Mine is five and I much prefer what you are doing.

I tried SO hard to do this for my godchildren, but their parents wouldn't open an account!

My nephew is two. For his first Christmas, I opened a college savings plan for him and put in $100. We plan to put in another $100 this year and every year thereafter. Can't really swing more than that but I figure he will have a little slush fund for books etc when he goes to college. The question is, should I also send him something to unwrap? Even just as a little token? And if so, any suggestions? I know as he gets older I will def have to send something fun bc at age five he's not going to be impressed by a contribution to his college account!
