Do a lot of people do this now? Are entertainment centers old news?

Yes, way old news. Except in pinterest land, where everyone is turning them into kid's kitchens, dog houses, etc.

A wall. I would be very nervous about it being bumped and falling.

You don't have to mount it - you can use a console.

I bought a glass-front bookshelf with doors from Crate and Barrel and drilled a big hole in the back (special big-hole attachment) to run all the wires out. I like a console because I need somewhere to put my home theater and DVR. You could do the same with a buffet or a dresser - even a vintage piece.

Remember that 65" is the diagonal measure so your console can be shorter than 65" long.

Entertainment Centers are very old news. Put it on the wall - it's not hard, they sell really good mounts that you can put up yourself, and they have wall mounted shelves for under the TV that are unobtrusive and occasionally tasteful.

But wouldn't I need something to put underneath it?

no that's why you are mounting it on the wall. you can put a shelf above or below it to hold your cable box and whatever else.
