PP, love, love your ideas! You are hired! I think you totally pinned my style with the S&L pieces, and also, I'm obsessed with that mirror you linked to. Love it - thank you!!!

I would go with light tones, like white and natural linen, and some clean lines to bring in some masculinity. It's in now, and you have the rest of your life to live with dark traditional furniture. I have no idea what your budget is, so these are examples.

I would paint the walls BM Cloud White.

Headboard:
http://www.serenaandlily.com/Furnishings/Headboards-Beds-Balboa-Headboard I think you need some texture in there somewhere. You can also find similar elsewhere. They also have a white frame with natural cane that I love.

If you go with tufted, I would stick to a natural linen like this: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Humble-Haute-Hampton-Beige-Queen-size-Diamond-Tufted-Headboard/8032203/product.html?searchidx=3 You can find some that are more classic without tufting and also with stronger lines, like the ones at Serena and Lily or Crate and Barrel. Also look for Gustavian or Louis type beds in white or gray.

Bedding:
http://www.craneandcanopy.com/products/the-linden-dark-navy-blue-border-duvet-cover?gclid=CP_cnezHrMICFVNp7AodcBYAAw I would go with a hotel style like this or the ones that have complete border, to bring in color and be a bit more masculine.

Throw pillow:

Nightstands:
The options are endless depending on your style.

For really fun modern: http://www.serenaandlily.com/Furnishings/Furniture-Bedside-Tables-Lark-Side-Table-White
Classic (in either color but if you do gray, do a Louis desser): http://www.ballarddesigns.com/sidney-open-side-table/furniture/bedroom/bedroom-furniture/316928

Bedside lamps:

Dresser:

If you really like blue and want to make it more traditional, get a Chinese stool and put it on the side of your dresser or nightstand.

If you still need something natural, put in tortoise shell natural blinds or this stool:
http://www.serenaandlily.com/Furnishings/Furniture-Stools-Benches-Elsa-Stool-Natural

And, finally some art:
Black and white photography is always good, any sepia-toned would work well. http://www.minted.com/product/wall-art-prints/MIN-KGD-GNA/morning-walk-on-the-seine?ccId=102993&org=title
I like this for the bedroom: http://www.minted.com/product/wall-art-prints/MIN-3WQ-GNA/as-you-are?ccId=337059&org=title
Abstract print: http://domino.com/minted Can't link to piece but try Sand and Lands 11

Have fun OP! Just pick one piece next, then pick another, then pick another. All of the above mix and match or find similar.

It really depends what look you are going for. If you want dark then wood furniture and a blue or red spread would be good. If you want light then you can definitely go with white furniture.

Personally I would go with an ivory (assuming the color in the rug is ivory) bedspread/coverlet in a matelassé or pick stitch and accent with red/blue pillows. I'd probably go with dark wood for the bed but try to minimize dark wood in the rest of the room.

I would be patient and see how the rug looks in the room before buying too much.

I like that rug a lot!

I would do a soft blue or cream on the walls to keep the room restful and light, then go for dark wood furniture. For window coverings, I would do dark wood blinds or light, gauze-y curtains in a creamy white. For bedding, I think you could do a solid cream/white (with texture) bed cover, or go bold and do a navy-and-white rugby stripe, which is what I would do. I love the look of stripes and floral together. Both West Elm and Pottery Barn have a lot of bedding options that would go well with this design.

I'd wait until you actually have the rug since the white part may actually be ivory or gray. Also it is a bright blue not navy. I have a dark navy main color rug. It needs pure white not ivory.

Super helpful! What color upholstered headboard? And what color night stands would you do? Thanks.

I would not do an upholstered headboard...keep things simple (There is a lot going on in the rug.). If you can get a swatch of your rug, take it to a furniture/fabric store and you can pick your fabric (curtains, furniture, etc.) that will go with it.

Would you do a dark wood (espresso) type of headboard then?

So would you do a solid duvet of one of the rig colors (light blue?) rather than white duvet with colorful throw pillows?

you don't have to go solid. The key is to pull colors from the rug. If you find a duvet that has those colors and you like it, buy it. The good news is the rug has lots of colors, so you can pull your favorite color out.

I have a rug that I love for our master bedroom in our new house! This is a first home so we are buying pretty much all new furniture. My question is, what bedding, bed frame, and other decor would go well with this? I think the bedding would need to be plain (maybe with some colorful pillows) since the rug is so busy. What about art and other decoration around the room?
