I'm not a fan because I've never gotten good service but another option that way is Peppinos. The shopping centerooks vacant but the restaurant is still open. Also in the large thriving shopping center is a new sushi place. Can't recall the name if it right now.

I've lived in Laurel for over 20 years and unfortunately we have a dearth of good non-chain restaurants. But some options:

If you head south on US-1 from the mill, when you get to the Town Center at Laurel (the rebuilt Laurel Mall), across the street, there is a restaurant called Red Sky. It used to be an upscale restaurant, but they found that there wasn't a real big market (although that may change with the rebuilt mall), so they changed to more of a good, but not upscale seafood restaurant. It's still pretty good, but not upscaled.

In the new Laurel Mall, they've opened a restaurant called B.J.'s Restaurant and Brewhouse that just opened a week or two ago. We haven't been there yet, but it looks like a higher end chain steakhouse/brewhouse.

If you like Indian/Thai, you can try Sapphire Indian/Thai. It's at the corner of MD-197 and Contee Road. It's good Indian food (I haven't tried the Thai food there).

There is also a new small place called Curry Leaf on US-1 at the SE corner of the intersection with Cypress Street (the South end of Laurel Lake plaza where the Best Buy, Lowe's and Safeway are). It's Indian cuisine and I've had several friends who tried it and said it was quite good. I have not been there yet.

If you go by Yelp, it says Sapphire is 3.5/5 and Curry Leaf is 4.5/5 stars.

For El Salavadorean/Mexican cuisine, there is a small restaurant called Mango's Grill. It is at the corner or US-1 and Cherry Lane in the strip mall on the SE corner. Again, I have not been there, but some local friends have talked about it well and it is rated 4.5/5 on Yelp.

OP here, folks we're going the wrong way. For starters, we are meeting a firned around 11am Saturday for Dim Sum at Hollywood East. The it's off to Savage Mill ... So, the restaurant on the way back should be somewhere to the south of Savage, not the north.

I do remember a really good tex mex place near the greenbelt metro, but I was carless then and someone drove me there from the metro and i was kind of dozing...

So, let's think somewhere to the south, down BW parkaway, Rte 1 or Interstate 95.

Go to Klobys in fulton.

Ew Rams head is terrible

There's a Rams Head inside Savage Mill itself. We've always had good food in there.

I disagree that the Columbia lakefront is closer than Laurel, however, it's still pretty close (15 minutes, maybe) and those are all nice places to eat. I had the privilege to eat at Seasons 52 the week they opened, and it was amazing.

I also love Pasta Plus. Amazing place for the scozy strip mall setting and really dumb name. Inside it's all class!Funny situation..even after these years.

And the mall is across from that..Mangiones, Seasons 52, Cheesecake Factory (not my jam, though). If you want to be really close by go to the Kings Contrivance Village Center. Nice BBQ place there.

Savage Mill. It's not plural like Potomac Mills because it really was once a mill. Sorry, that one's a pet peeve of mine.

Is Pasta Plus still around? I used to live in Laurel and, dang, that was some good Italian food. Sorry, I don't have any other suggestions. Does Ram's Head Tavern still have a place inside Savage Mill?

I'm looking for some new ideas. My sister has never been there, so being a good brother I am taking her there... and might get her something nice at Artcraft, but I know she'll love the Queens Ink ...I foresee sealing wax, signets and rubber stamps in her future....

So, we've been to Pasta Plus a bunch. Even though I live in Springfield and She lives in Alexandria, we wind up that way about 4 times a year. Any other suggestions. We are OK with OK food if the atmosphere is unique.
