Public state schools are pretty tight with merit money to OOS students. I don't know how certain you are about the scholarship but I wouldn't assume it unless it's guaranteed $ somehow. Also, BME means your DS will (most likely) have to get masters/PhD after college which may or may not be fully funded. So you need to factor that in your calculation. Congrats to your DS!

Some schools have reputations and some don't. Pot is everywhere but you only heard of such reputations if it's "big" at the school.

I loved UW Madison (I grew up in MN). The town and campus are fantastic; class choices and professors are great; interesting mix of students; plenty of part time jobs for students. I lived in the dorms the first year but found it to be cheaper to live off campus for the rest of my time there.

Excellent school and neat town. Cold, though, obviously! I also remember my friends complaining that rent for off campus apartments was really expensive, but we were all from the midwest, so compared to here it's probably not bad.

It would be a great choice with great people.

OP here. He isn't worried about gigantic schools, he attends a huge HS already.

OP here. Thanks, PP. DS did apply to UMD, haven't heard yet. He absolutely hated UVA when he visited it, didn't even want to apply there. It would be ideal moneywise if he stayed in the area but in the end, DH and I didn't go to local schools either

UW Madison is a great school and BME is a good choice there. Yes, better than UMD or UVa. Madison is a great town to go to college in. It's super well respected in academia, not sure about industry.

it is a very strong school. however for BME, not sure if it would be worth the out of state dollars compared to UMD or UVA

it's big in terms of the midwest but not in terms of somewhere like UW (seattle) or UC Santa Cruz.

So DS just got his first college acceptance letter last night. While we are all mega excited, DH and I know little to nothing about this school. I am looking for the good, the bad and the ugly feedback. FWIW, DS' major is biomedical engineering.
