OP,it's really hard to judge here since we don't know how close you are with your parents.I personally can't imagine such situs toy with mine or with IL or any kind of my family or friends. We are here without any family and I really really miss them so when they come I feel blessed and don't want them to ever leave us.But everyone is very different and I don't want to judge without knowing much

I always take it this way:if you family- you can stay as long as you want as long as you don't expect hotel treatment .My parents usually come for a very long time, mom stays sometimes up to one month .But she does everything around the house .I actually feel help when she is here.Same with my MIL.I am very lucky as my MIL helped us with even moving, she moved with us and while I was sleeping till 8 or so she was putting everything in places. After everything was done she flu home!
Well I had to look for certain items for a while in my house but I am still so thankful she helped so much .

But, they have already been here for 6 nights. Just checking to see if I'm being totally rude.

Did you ask them to leave or did they offer?

Maybe they are looking forward to a little time to themselves but are afraid that you'll be hurt that they want to leave?

Oh, no way, that is waaaay too long!

I could not do that. I am very, very close to my family but would not want to stay for more than three or four days. We never stay more than a few days when we visit them.

We have family out of the country who stay for a month. 2-3 weeks is good for us as we have a tiny house. It gets hard but it is important for the kids.

We max out at 2-3 days. We are all introverts and having house guests is hard for that reason.

Two or three days. Staying any longer, no matter how closely related,is just not polite. My parents stayed a bit longer when they were they to help me after I had given birth, but for visits where they are not there expressly to help, they stay for three days at the most.

I personally don't really like staying at other people's houses. I'd rather stay in a hotel and have a little more freedom to choose what I'd like to do.

It sounds like you are asking because you're either afraid of getting guilt about a short stay, or you have gotten it in the past. If that is the case, please try to stand up to people this year.

If you're not getting/haven't yet received guilt, what would be your ideal timeframe?

FWIW, normally DH and I give 2-3 days max. Any longer and we're sick of the relative, no matter how nice they are. We're just introverted like that.

As a regular host, I feel 3 nights is good. HOWEVER, if you need to invite them for longer, just say something like, "you are welcome to stay for the week as long as you can help yourself and make yourself at home. I have John's schedule and work and won't be around during the day."

If your parents/ILs have to fly to see you and your kids, how many nights is reasonable during Thanksgiving/Christmas. Air travel is expensive and a pain, so it can't be too short, but I have a job and kids and stuff to do, and can't cook/clean/accommodate people indefinitely. What do you think is reasonable?
