Ah, yes. Those white parents, whose children outperform your race's in pretty much every measurable outcome - college attendance rates, graduation rates, health, money indicators, violence, crime, and so on. You keep hitting your kids. It's clearly working very well for you!

Which race exactly are you assuming for PP?

(I'd just let him leave his coat at home.)

Hell, yeah. Teach that boy what "respect" means with some good corporal punishment. That way, he'll be good and ready to cap someone who looks at him wrong by the time he's 15.

FWIW, I asked him to put on a coat before going out to see a winter lights display.

I think you overreacted. If I punished my kid every time he called me annoying, he'd be sitting on the steps for the next 12 years.

The correct reaction is to say, "Of course I'm annoying, I'm your mother. Put on your coat or you don't go outside."

I think the theory behind punishing your kid is that it will change the behavior, and they won't keep saying it 12 years. I'm not saying that it would or would't work, but I do believe that is the idea.

I would also assume that most kids who said something like that actually don't want to go out to see the winter lights display, so "or you don't go" isn't going to work.

The first time is when you let him know that under no circumstances will he speak to you like that, and the second and subsequent times are when you punish him. Usually the consequence in our house for disrespect is loss of screen time, but do whatever works for your family.

This.

Warning the first time, and then consequences the next time.

Thankfully, my kids know the consequences of being disrespectful to elders in my household, so they don't pull this kind of stunt.

Wow, watch out in Big Mama's house. Wonder how you plan to handle it when Child Services shows up at your house.
