A method other than in person, I don't need to waste my time/effort for a breakup.

I get the process in private thing. I was going to break up with my ex in person, but ended up doing it over the phone. Turns out it was a good thing, he said he would've been upset to get together only to be broken up with.

Don't tell him he's a great guy, either. Your actions would clearly contradict your words. If he was really that great, you wouldn't be breaking up with him.

I am an outlier here, but I prefer to be broken up with over email. I am a woman and I always found that gave me the time to process the news in private.

Do it in person, please. But do it. I had a multi-year GF just disappear. I did not hear from her. We were in college at different schools, 500 miles away...I could not just drop in and find out. But, I do not know what happened to her. I am still curious, 30 years later.

Do it in person or over the phone so you can answer any questions during one conversation and be done with it. Make it definitive, if you seem wishy washy he may think he can talk you into giving him another chance. Make it about you, not his faults. Good luck.

"It's not you, it's me" -- a tried and true relationship-ender. Do it in person. Don't spend a lot of time running down the other person's "faults."

I've never broken up over a woman using any other method other than face to face. Even ones I ended up hating.

After 8 months of seeing someone I've realized he is emotionally unavailable and overly critical and that generally I feel lonely in the relationship. What is the best way to end it? Can I send an email or text? He has never said I love you and we hardly see each other due to kids/work/distance.

I don't want to hurt him, but nor do I want to continue on this path...
