You may want to check out some Al-Anon meetings for the next time your FIL visits. I know you're only dealing with this now and then but it's good to have some support for times like this. In the meantime, the best advice I can give you is to take care of yourself. He's not going to change and it's pointless to fix him but you can set limits for yourself.
