I'd imagine looters justify to themselves that these are the kinds of things they'd be able to afford if they weren't being institutionally discriminated against.

In the case of Ferguson, since it's so much about the struggle against police control, I imagine looting is also a way of trying to win the power struggle. Looters are committing a crime that they very likely won't be punished for. That's gotta feel pretty satisfying if you believe that Darren Wilson also committed a crime that he will not be punished for.

I don't think that every looter is going through this thought process before grabbing a TV, but I do think it's there even if subconsciously.

It makes people believe they're in it for the free stuff, but there has to be another reason, right? Damaging police cars, I can sort of get. Burning a federal bldg, I'd understand too. But breaking in to a walgreen's and taking what, tampons and cigars? I don't understand the motivation for theft. Does anyone have answer?
