Make it the traditional cambells and store bought fried onions way, or from scratch.

I've made it both ways, they're both good.

Thanks, OP here. I've never made green been casserole so even the traditional recipe isn't familiar to me. I did a Google search and see a few variations on the cream of mushroom/fried onion method.

Nope, there are oodles of ways. The one that comes to mind is making it all from scratch.

I usually use fresh green beans and cream of celery soup because I hate mushrooms. I also always get the container of french's fried onions, rather than trying to do that myself.

We used to make it fresher with fresh beans, an onion-mushroom cream sauce, and fried onions on top (I used to skip them). It was really good but very rich.

I know it's lame, but I make it the original way:

1 box of Trader Joe's or Pacific condensed Cream of Mushroom soup
frozen or canned French-style green beans
fried onion rings mixed in and layered on top

Anyone have a tasty recipe? I'm not a big fan of this dish but have been assigned to make it for Thanksgiving.
TIA.
