Hotel Monaco is good. I'd also recommend one in Arlington along the orange line if you are concerned about cost. Residence Inn (Quincy St) and the Westin near Ballston are both good. Courthouse Residence Inn would be another good choice. Easy walk to metro and lots of restaurants near by.

The Grand Hyatt is a good one. On top of a metro and near lots of things.

Go on hotels.com or kayak or any other hotel aggregator site, and pull up the map view. Any of the name brand hotels downtown will be decent. Just find some place near e.g. Metro Center or Gallery Place, and you'll be good. (The Westin meets this criteria, will be fine.)

Family of 4 -- two teens coming over winter break for a short visit. I no longer live in DC and didn't spend a lot of time in hotels when I did. We did have a staycation at the W for a couple of nights that was fun but I'm not sure that's the best place for this family. They plan on visiting museums, shopping, eating, the usual. They won't have a car so will need to be close to a Metro. Would the Westin City Center be a good choice? Any other ideas? TIA!
