Stare at your phone like everyone else does these days and tune him out. Or, learn how to cook and help out the ladies in the kitchen. Or feign an illness like diarrhea and make frequent trips to the restroom. Or, bring a good book if football isn't your thing.

Welcome aboard. My FIL used to insult people of my ethnic heritage openly at the table and comment on how people that held my father's profession (doctor) were all crooks stealing from honest people such as himself. It took everything I had not to knock his teeth out. Eventually he had a series of small strokes and now just smiles and can't sustain a coherent thought. But before that, I once leaned over to him and very quietly said, "Just so you know, I don't like you so back off." And he did. Most loud-mouthed butt heads are as weak as wet noodles on the inside.

What if op is not into football? Can you bring some games for people to play? Cards. Backgammon. Etc.

These are all good. Another option is to fake a time-sensitive work thing, and excuse yourself to a bedroom with a laptop to do some work.

If you've got kids, best thing you can do is offer to keep them entertained. You get time with kids, and have an excuse to keep yourself away from unpleasant relatives.

+1 Start planning outings now. Go on the internet and check out kid activities at the library and movies, etc. for Thanksgiving week. Also, you could get a daily guest pass for the local gym for yourself.

Doing the dreaded visit next week to my FIL who is an egotistical, dimwitted ass. Other than support my DW, shutting up, and drinking, anyone have any tips to survive the 100 hour trip to hell and back?
