Not PP, but correction: application money

Oh they definitely want the application for the reason cited in the article. It's a way to game the US News rankings.

I wouldn't be surprised if the application fees aren't a nice bonus as well. Lots of people on the thread are saying that it takes time/resources to review all the applications, but I'll bet a large percentage are just flushed from the get-go. If you're a normal student w/ a 3.2 GPA and a 1200 on the SAT, I don't think Yale spends much time "reviewing" your application.

PS. Please stop inviting DS to summer camps at your Ivy League school and Stanford. You guys would never take him (he's smart but the grades aren't there) and it's heartless to lead kids on so you can make a few bucks over the summer.

P.S. I kind of think she's leaving out something. Maybe she's from a super poor city?

+1

And maybe now she'll get into one of those colleges after all. A girl from my high school was accepted to Princeton after making a very public ass of herself during a presidential hall town meeting.

Actually they want the application, not the money (hence the UChicago fee waiver she mentioned). Application fees don't drive US News stats.

Well written and accurate. I am surprised she got all that stuff from top tier colleges though. My DC with similar stats to hers got letters from a much lower tier of colleges, my DC with much higher stats got the Ivy/Wash U/etc. letters.

Agreed. There should be a hall of shame for the worst offenders. I actually wouldn't include Yale among them, but Chicago and Washington University are up there.

I thought this was a good point:

"These colleges argue that the best low-income students don’t apply to the most competitive schools and, thus, miss out on the opportunity to graduate from college with little or no debt.

But these kids don’t need pamphlets and false hope. They need experienced guidance counselors who can help them through the complicated process."
