Get ready to search for many more months.

Obama will be increasing the supply of workers.

Hundreds of thousands of h1b relatives will flood the IT market.

Millions of low level workers will flood other job markets.

If you go the volunteer path...limit your time there. Say to three months or only one day per week.

Read the "should I quit" thread about the volunteer who got shafted when they applied to get paid for what they were volunteering to do... the organization just didn't want to pay what they were getting for free.

Try part time in the public or for-profit sector. Part time in general is hard to find. Most people I know who do part time, started off full time.

I found two part time jobs with non-profits on Craigs List during the last year. One was for an educational non-profit and the other one was for a cultural exchange program. Both had decent work, but really low pay.

Call the non-profits on your short list and ask whoever answers the phone which temp agency they use. They go apply to that agency and say you are especially interested in assignments at that non-profit. Once there do a good job, be likeable and use your time to network into the role you want.

Part-time is tough to find. I've been in nonprofit work for 15 years, and everyone I know who works part-time started as full-time, earned a strong reputation, and then cut back to have a better work/life balance.
