you are lucky that you both trust them and that they are young/active/interested.

my mil has minimal interest in children and definitely doesn't want anything to do with infants.

I grew up spending at least one week a year with my grandparents without my parents. Seems like it would alternate which set of grandparents had us for that time. Sometimes we would go to their house (especially when my grandparents were still working), sometimes they would come stay with us. My parents would go on a vacation without us during that week.

My parents do the same for us. We have not had my MIL do the same yet, but probably will this coming summer. When my FIL was still alive, it wasn't viable because he had dementia and took all of my MIL's energy and focus.

08:24 - I don't think the OP plans on being gone the entire time her in-laws visit, just part of it to break up the 2-4 week visit.

Did everyone agree to this? Your husband is okay not seeing his family and they are okay with not seeing him?

Huh?

Sometimes the husband uses work to hide outwhen ILs are in town.

Good for you. I wouldn't trust my ILs though.

Will they follow your directions? Are they aware of safety issues?
If so, good for you!

I like my plan better. Drop off kids at sleep away camp on Sunday in summer time, fly out on Monday for couples vacation. No in laws. No fuss no muss!

We just did this except it was my mother that was visiting. We stocked her with movie tickets, gift card to Silver Diner (kids love that place) and Chuck E Cheese. It made it even easier for her becaues the kids had a great activity with her almost every day and she didn't have to cook much. DH and I had a long weekend away. It was so very awesome. I'm so happy for you!

Thanks...
For what it's worth, my in-laws are pretty damn difficult, so I figure after almost 15 years of this sh*t, I deserve it!

A win-win-win-win would be if you could arrange an extended play date with my very loveable and perfectly behaved children in your home while I go anywhere warm for a long time.

My in-laws live in another country and always want to visit for 2-4 weeks at a time. I get that, but it sucks as I find being around them in my own home stressful. This year, it occurred to me: grandparents stay with kids and bond; parents go on a mini-vacation by themselves. Obviously this only works (or best works) when your kids are a bit older and the GPs are young and with-it enough to babysit reliably and kids are comfortable with the GPs... but for me, it's a win-win-win.
