But they learn about it in school. Our school is having an assembly to honor vets today.

The schools are open, but SACC's offices are closed (just called, hoping to set up an online account). Even though the people who actually take care of the kids were there at the crack of dawn this a.m.

I ponder these things when the school board comes begging for more money every year.

I always wondered why more people didn't complain about FCPS not giving this day as a holiday, but I think this is the reason!

Well, FCPS just had last Mon & Tues off so another day a week later would be pushing it. Like a PP said, I grew up with Columbus Day off but always going on Veterans Day.

If the kids are in school and you're home, enjoy the solitude!

It's never been a holiday in FCPS. Just because it's a Fed holiday, that doesn't mean school is out. I taught in MD for about 8 years. We never had Columbus Day off, but in VA, we do.
