We got an au pair, too. It was a great experience. We were VERY frank about what we needed and ended up with a trained OT from Germany.

We got an au pair. We were very frank and honest about the job description. It is working out nicely. It all depends on what your needs are. Our au pair works 45 hours each week. She is off the whole weekend. We went through Interexchange and looked at candidates that were okay with SN but not trained as a SN nanny. We have physical needs but not behavioral issues.

It's not six months...more like 6 weeks from when you match to arrival. You need to build in a couple months to look for the right match, however.

care.com has a special needs section. but my first response would've been au pair. I have had great success by choosing au pairs who have work experience w/ children w/ special needs AND plan to pursue a career working with children w/ special needs. Takes a bit longer to find, but worth. Bonus is that these candidates are usually more mature and responsible, avoiding many of the pitfalls of a typical au pair scenario.

I think I may need a nanny for my DS, and I don't even know where to start. I've already checked the nanny forum here and most of the nannies want closer in towards DC. I'm in Loudoun. Any ideas on where to look? Not interested in live-ins/au pairs. Thanks
