This applies to most places. The vegetarian combination and one of the lamb tibs. I'm not as big a fan of the door war but if you like chicken, hard boiled egg and spicy get that. We also like Gebeta which is south on Georgia near Pacci's. Langano is good too. Bête is very good as is abol although abol feels a bit less traditional/authentic. Addis has the best atmosphere but in my opinion Gebeta and bête are the best in terms of the food. All are family friendly. Addis has a lunch buffet every day of the week. Again not my favorite but if you are looking to try several options at once.

If you were a newbie to Ethiopian, what would you order at Addis Ababa?

I should say Bete would also be nice in cold weather, but an added bonus is eating outside in the summer.

We like Addis Ababa, but have also had good food at Abol and Bete. Abol is across from the AFI theater and Bete is sort of hidden on a side street near Whole Foods. Bete is nice in the summer when you can eat out side.

If you care, Addis Ababa is the only place where you will regularly find other farenji (non-Ethiopians). Also the food truck Lily Pad on the Run has excellent Ethiopian food.

I'm the OP and I thank you for these two suggestions. I will try each in time.

I like Addis Ababa that is on Fenton just south of Thayer. There was another one that actually liked a little batter on Georgia, but I don't remember its name and think it might have closed.

I occasionally travel to Silver Spring MD and struck by the large number of small Ethiopian restaurants along Georgia and Fenton Ave, and surrounding blocks. There must be 20 or more. Can anyone familiar with them suggest one to try?
