OP, I think this group does certification. You should definitely move forward on this. Being a great organizer is a very hard-to-find skill and many people would benefit from this talent.

Personally, I have hired a professional organizer on several occasions and I have found it worth every dime. Go for it!

You can get "certified" by a professional association. You can informationally interview professional organizers (over the phone or in person). If you join a professional organization, you'll be able to network that way.

To build up your client list, I'd start with your nanny job. Ask if they have friends who could use help with organization. (Pretty much everybody does who has kids.) Ask if you can use them for a reference when trying to build up your client list.

Ask if you can take photos of tidied areas (b/f and after is even better). Remember and be upfront with them about this to remove any GPS codes: http://lifehacker.com/5756373/how-can-i-remove-personal-info-like-locaion-from-photographs

Also, take pictures of your own closet, pantry, etc. to help you build up a portfolio. GL

Ultimately being a "professional" just means that you get paid for it and that you do it for business, rather than just personal, reasons. Just build up clients, offer your services, ask happy clients to spread the word, join any organizations that exist, establish a web/social media presence, print up business cards and get your financial/tax side in order, and VIOLA!

Ok so can I have your info because I really need organizational help in my house!

Get a clientele list first. Use your college listserv, or ask women you know to use theirs. Set up an efficient, crisp website and have cards printed up. The business will follow.

I am not sure if I am posting this in the correct forum, but I hope some of you can give me some tips/ideas/input, etc.

I am an excellent organizer. The best.

Not to toot my own horn, but I really am outstanding at it. And the best part of it is, I LOVE LOVE doing it. I could do it for hours and could even see myself doing it as a hobby. Well sort of.

Anyway, I currently work as a part-time in home professional nanny and during children's nap times, I voluntarily organize the children's play areas, closets and drawers. The parents always remark on how tidy everything looks and how I should do this for a living. I wish I could. I think I would be totally within my element.

I see people on shows such as Lifetime's Hoarders saying they are "Professional" Organizers. Other shows as well.

How does one obtain such a title? So far, I have not seen a college where I can obtain a Ph.D in organizing. How do these people get certified or credentialed to be able to call themselves professional organizers?? Because I would love to become one and am seriously thinking of making business cards and seeing where I could go with this.

A few of my nanny families are willing to serve as referrals for me.

Any ideas?? Thanks in advance everyone.
