Madhatter in Dupont has private spaces, both their back room and upstairs. No idea of their cost, but since their food and atmosphere are more on the casual side, it might be more affordable than some of the fine dining places.

The Partisan does private events and the food could be considered "manly" (meat/charcuterie).

Third this suggestion. I host events there regularly because it's so dependable.

OP here. Thanks for these suggestions, really helpful.

I was thinking of just having some appetizers and drinks- not a full dinner (can't afford it for that many people).

I'll reach out to some of these places to get some ideas of pricing.

Would love additional suggestions in the meantime! Thanks!

Minimum is usually 1500-2500. Tabard Inn is also good and charges a room rental fee as opposed to a food/bev min.
The minimum you quoted sounds really low from events we've had.
I could be completely wrong but that is my recollection. Mind you, I was only referencing the room minimum. Most private dining options downtown run 65-90 per person, not including booze, so obviously the total cost would be much higher. For 40, it could run you 4000-7500.

I went to a private party at Room 11. They have a private room with its own bar. I didn't host, so I have no idea what the minimum was. It was fun though!

Del Campo is really cool. They have a great private room. No idea the cost though.

DH will be turning 35 in January and I would like to host a surprise party for him at a bar or restaurant with a private room, somewhere in NW DC would be ideal (downtown, U Street, Adams Morgan etc). I would love any and all suggestions- probably invite around 40 people.

Also- would love an idea of cost or minimums at these places, as I have no idea! TIA
