The elementary afterschool programs are minimal. I don't think they get you to a point where you start at a higher level in MS. I am sure they make it easier though.

Our 6th grader takes world language (compacted Spanish) in lieu of reading...it's a little stressful knowing that it will show up on the HS transcript, but we make that class a priority and it has been fine. Also, DC had no interest in taking reading, particularly since she was taking an Advanced English class already. I don't think 6th graders can opt out of BOTH reading and a world language -- there was a schedule conflict for one of the language classes and it was never an option to forego reading if the student didn't take a language...instead DC would have had to drop the arts class, which DC refused to do. I do not remember whether there's an advanced reading class available...I'd contact the MS staff to see what the options are.

If a 6th grader is eligible to take a world language and declines, s/he can always take it in 7th and/or 8th, when it is regularly offered to students.

At our middle school, the only other option is reading and it is heterogenious. At some middle schools 6th graders take the HS class slowly covered 1 semester over the whole year and at other schools they take it at regular speed.

I recently heard that advanced readers can take a language in 6th grade and it is a high school level class (and shows up on their high school transcript). If an advanced reader chooses not to take world languages in 6th grade, what classes are available? Does it vary by middle school? I am wondering if reading is the only option or if there is also advanced reading or something else.
