So if all your friends have Fitbit, go with that. Or jawbone or garmin or nike or whatever. They all do more or less the same thing.
If jogging or running are what's motivating you (rather than number of steps), any gps device will upload to Strava.com, which has a great community of athletes at all levels. I love entering the monthly how-much-can-you-run challenges, and the monthly 10k challenges. Getting in one 6.2 mile run a month is a great goal.
I also have a fitbit, and haven't really found it that engaging even with a community of friends on there. I don't wear the fitbit during runs, though, so it really doesn't reflect my overall fitness.
