They are a year ahead by the time they are beginning fourth grade, b/c they do 3rd and 4th grade, combined, in third grade.

+1 My child somehow started taking advance math in 5th grade even though we turned down AAP. He ended up in Honor Algebra as a 7th grader from a language immersion program. Middle School placement is decided based on SOL & Iowa scores. AAP isn't the only way to advance math.

Most, not all, schools are offering adv math now in 3rd grade even if that school is not an aap center or level 4 school. Those who score advanced pass and get a certain score on the iowa algebra aptitude test in 6th grd can take algebra in 7th. If you want more advanced than that, you won't find it in fcps.

15:17 here....I also wanted to comment on a PP's comment that math is generally differentiated in 2nd or 3rd grade. This is not the case in my kids' base school . Just last week, for the first time, my fifth grader's teacher said they were going to start separating kids and sending them to one of the three 5th grade teachers for math instruction. Prior to this, there has never been any differentiation (within the classroom or by separating into different classes) for math EXCEPT for kids sent to adv math everyday. Roughly 1/3 of the kids have been going to adv math for the past few years (since 3rd grd). The rest of the kids have been receiving one size of math (until last week).

As far as I can tell, math at our aap (3rdgrade) center is one-size-fits-all. Maybe that will change in the future....or not. It appears to be true for all classrooms of the 3rd grade. They have the same books, assignments, tests, etc.. Either you can handle aap math, you work harder to catch up, or you go back to the base school.

Generally, Math is differentiated in AAP and Gen-ed starting in 2nd or 3rd grade- depending on the ES in FCPS. Fairfax County is LARGE and things are run slightly differently in each school depending on the Principal and the specific population at the school. There are 139 elementary schools in the county. Once you have narrowed it down a bit, contacts the school and ask how math is done in 3rd grade.

In our school, all kids in our 4th grade AAP class are taking Algebra. There aren't different levels. Same goes for English and the grammar they're doing there.

I know gen ed has different math levels though. So you can be in the regular class but pulled up for advanced math if that's what applies.

We are not in FFX but are considering a move there, so wondering how it works. We have been very unhappy with the "one size fits all" math in our current school district.
