My GP just scared me and told me that the two most common age groups for abortions are 18-25 and 40+.

Did your OB run blood tests to see if you are in or near menopause yet? If you're on the pill it will be hard to determine if menopause has started because the pill is keeping you regular. Blood tests will reveal your current hormone levels.

As someone who had an abortion in her late 20s and still thinks about it to this day (20 years later), please don't risk getting pregnant. Getting an abortion is my BIGGEST and most shameful regret.

So sorry. Look into Project Rachel for healing.

Yes, use contraception. My ob says if you are having periods, you can get pregnant. It's that simple. I had a baby in my late 40s. It IS possible, OP.

Your OB isn't trying to scare you, just telling you the TRUTH! If you want a real lesson on how clueless some women are about their own fertility, search these boards for 43 and pregnant!, 46 and pregnant, 40 whatever and pregnant.

OP here -- thanks for the responses. I guess I wish we could get a free pass at some point…lol. I thought I was done having to worry about pregnancy. I will research the IUD methods. Maybe I'll become a nun...

Well, I'm the OP of the "46 and pregnant" thread. If getting pg would be devastating for you, then yea, staying on bc is probably your best choice, though maybe you might want to review your options to see if there's something better for you. Though clearly I'm not the best person to ask about that .

Check with your doctor, of course, but I believe the rule is that you can stop using birth control one year after your last period.

Use birth control. It's never safe without it if you would be devastated if you got pregnant.

When is it safe to stop using birth control? I still have regular periods every 28 days at age 49 1/2. I don't think there is much chance of getting pregnant, but I would be devastated if I found out that I was. Is it ever really safe to have sex without some form of birth control if you are having periods. My GP just scared me and told me that the two most common age groups for abortions are 18-25 and 40+.
