We have a casual house and don't really entertain, so I have no guilt about framed photos on the mantle/shelves in "public" spaces. Much of my family has passed and it makes me happy to see the pictures and remember.

We don't have large family photos hanging as art because it's not really our style. That's not a judgement at all -- we have lots of antique maps framed on the walls, which isn't exactly highbrow. We just like them.

In formal rooms I don't have photos, casual rooms and a few halls (basement, family room) I do have photos. But in general, it's your house, do what you want.

I have 2 walls in the house dedicated to the kids pictures. I had DH put up picture rail and now I just change the frames and pictures as I like.

When my first was born, I ordered 8x10s and thought they were large. Now most of the pics are 16x20 or 20x24 and the little ones are the 11x14.

It is really a personal decision. It isn't really for me, but perhaps it is because we have so many amazing non-family pieces of art for our walls. I hang a few family photos in our bedroom and in the kids' rooms. I have a few frames on the fireplace mantel as well. That is it.

I also don't care for the family photos where everybody is wearing matching clothes, but that is personal preference too.

We also have photos going up the stair wall - historical family photos mixed with more modern day pix. It seems silly to me to have these nice portraits and just leave them sitting a drawer. We like walking by them and talking about them with DCs. It gives them a sense of family history. The pix make us happy.

We have no photos in our home. Mainly because DH and I are probably the most unphotogenic humans to ever walk the Earth.

Yes. I also decorate my house for Halloween, which was dismissed as tacky in another forum.

I don't follow any rules about decorating in my house because, you know, it's my house.

If you'd like to see the photos on your wall, hang them!

I have framed black and white photos of our parents and grandparents and great-grandparents going up the stairs.

I'm actually dealing with the same issue. In son's nursery I have some baby pictures of him. On nightstand I have a family photo and I'm struggling where to put up my other pics. I don't want to go overboard. I'm thinking for now I'm going to do a small gallery wall in family room and mudroom. It's a bit dated to have portraits all over the living room, and diving room etc. At least that's my opinion.

Do you use many family photos in your decorating? I don't mean some scattered 4 x 6 or 5 x 7s on bookshelves or tables, but larger black and whites or something similar on the walls. We have some nice professional ones but I can't decide if and where to hang them. Do you follow the old rule about not hanging them in the public space (living rooms)? I have mixed feelings. It always feels a bit silly and self-congratulatory when people have huge portraits of themselves or their wedding pictures all over, but then again we have some beautiful pictures of our kids that we really like.
