Not officially, but it sure seems like it sometimes! I am fed up with third grade math. My child has had at least two homework worksheets that had a math problem that couldn't be answered correctly. There was no answer. What's the point of this for a third grader? To show them that math is hard? To waste their time? To aggravate the parents who have to try to explain this to their kid? My kid isn't learning anything at school this year. He comes home tired, and completely overwhelmed by the amount of homework he has to do. What are they doing all day in school? He's there 7 hours a day and then he's supposed to come home and spend ANOTHER hour on homework? And he honestly seems like he has no clue what to do most of the time.
Can you post the unsolvable math problems? I am really curious.

Seems like the teacher's fault if they don't want to teach, not the standards. It's a lot of bs that there's not time for anything else.
For lower performing students, I say, thank goodness for some standards where teachers are held accountable. In Va a HS student will graduate and be competent in English, Algebra, Chemistry. Biology, History, etc. enough to go on to college. And for other students in this there's AP and Honors, this and that.
If the learning is dull I fault the teachers.

Virginia buys from book companies. So many states have adopted CC that the book companies are targeting their textbooks to CC. Unintended consequences.

A little off topic, but I feel like these worksheets are replacing true instruction during the day as well. I ask my daughter every day what she did in school, and every day she talks about all the worksheets they did. It's a concern how much instruction is, or is not happening during the day..

Do the worksheets say 'common core' on it? Do the tests? If so bring it to the attention of the principal and the school board. If you get no results, hire a lawyer to write a letter. Might seem extreme, but you are paying for your child's education with your tax dollars.
OP here. Yes, they do say "common core" and they have whatever standard/bullshit each worksheet addresses. Our principal doesn't care until more than a few parents say something to her. More are complaining, but not going higher.
The teacher should be linking her instruction to the VA Standards of Learning. If she is not doing this, but instead, using Common Core materials without linking, I would complain again. If the principal is not willing to listen, go to the principal’s supervisor or School Board.

Just because a curriculum was designed for common core standards doesn't mean it's inappropriate for Virginia standards, so no need to just to a lawyer(!) because a worksheet says common core. The ignorance here is astounding.

Common core is not a method of teaching or a way to word problems. It is a set of standards. Virginia did not adopt the official common core, but if you compared standards side by side they are very similar.
