You may also want to consider somewhere near Old Greenebelt. Not much further up the road than Hyattsville and right off of 295 for easy access to dc. Greenbelt Elementary is quite good. Parents I know with kids their love it. We had planned to do private school for our kid when she is old enough but by pure luck ended up near this school. Looking at recent test scores and talking to parents made us decide this public school is a great option.

What do you do for middle and high school?

Samuel Ogle middle school is one of the best in the county. Bowie high school does have the Summit program, a college prep program that students test into and is highly regarded.

Also look at homes in University Park and UPES. St. Jerome's in 20781 is private but very reasonably priced and is a nice Catholic option.

Also recommend Hyattsville 20781 in walking distance of Hyattsville Elementary. Very friendly neighborhood and involved families. A good principal and arts/music. The community feel is worth so much! It is also an easy commute into DC. You should google the local paper: Hyattsville Life & Times. A mom with preschoolers in the neighborhood is writing an article profiling a different Hyattsville elementary school in each issue. The first story is in the latest issue and talks about HES. Future issues will profile the new Spanish immersion ES and others! If you move in time you can enter the lottery for Spanish or French immersion. The French school is a Blue Ribbon School. Bussing is provided. Welcome and good luck!

I hear you. Real estate around here is crazy. I'd pick Hyattsville (20781) over Upper Marlboro. A lot of people on here have had really positive things to say about the elementary school there - very strong community support, and a lot of new arrivals choosing to send their kids there, get involved, etc. Doesn't solve your problem for higher grades but it gives you a decent option now.

I work in DC. I really can't afford private anymore... I'm in the pre-qualification process of home buying.. maybe this isn't the area for us. Areas I had been strongly considering are: Upper Marlboro, Hyattsville (20781). Schools are a major concern for me!

Do you work in a different area - where you could pick a school along your commute route?
