Royal Restaurant has a good brunch buffet on the weekends. Very casual and family-friendly. I've gone at 8 or 9 am, but double-check to see when they open. They serve a la carte breakfast in addition to the buffet on Saturdays. Sundays is buffet only.

Teaism is fantastic for breakfast. I could pretty much eat every meal there, but breakfast is my favorite.

+1 Extra Perks. Also Nearby Royal Restaurant. I think Teaism has breakfast. The new and exciting Harris Teeter finally opened, and they have a breakfast buffet hot bar.

Closer to King St, I think Bread & Chocolate opens early for breakfast. Society Fair (although probably not kid friendly), Bittersweet. Bruegger's, Le Madeleine, Le Pain Quotidien, etc.

Overwood doesn't open until 11 on Saturday. Fireflies opens at 9 on Saturday, though.

I like Le Pain Quotidien and Extra Perks. Both can get busy, but if you're going at breakfast time, you'd be fine.

What about La Madeleine? Honestly, it's not my favorite, but my husband loves it, and he must not be the only one. It seems to meet your criteria.

At actual breakfast time, not opening at 11 am, on Saturday not Sunday. We usually go to Del Ray Cafe for brunch but wondering if there's something in Old Town we don't know about. Reasonably family friendly (have highchairs). Please don't say Table Talk. I prefer Whole Foods and all the chaos to that place!
