OP here. Our appliances were on the older side and we replaced them with higher end appliances, but I am just worried it could happen again and ruin the floors again. As it is, the wood floors in our dining room have to replaced because the water seeped in there. We were on vacation at the time and our water was turned off, but we lost power and something went awry with the ice/water dispenser in the fridge. So, the water just sat there for a week. Sigh...

These were top of the line appliances, except the first fridge. The sink and the first fridge leak were due to plumber error. It happens.

OP, in my lifetime, my dishwasher has leaked twice, my refrigerator twice and sink once. One fridge leak went un noticed for months and warped the subfloor of the tile, but fortunately the tile was fine. Wood floors would have been damaged. I like the feel and look of wood, but to me, it is too risky.

We bought a new construction house over the summer with wood flooring in the kitchen. I never had wood in the kitchen before, so out of overprotection I put a big rectangular mat in front of the kitchen & dishwasher. It has been fine so far. My feet/legs dont get so tired because the surface is not as hard as tile.

What's wrong with wood?

Previous owners put in ceramic tile... Did a sub-par job and it started cracking 2 months after we moved in. While on vacation, our refrigerator flooded and now every tile has major cracks. I love the idea of wood but it just doesn't seem practical. Any suggestions?
