I'm astonished. My third-grader is a good reader, but there's a lot in that book that she would miss, simply because she's 8. And then there's the church bombing at the end. What books are the W and Z groups reading?

Your kid's writing or comprehension might be the issue. Once you can read, they are looking at more than just the ability to read.

Are you sure she is really at level T? That would have been the top group at our school I think since they never let kids read more than one grade ahead. In third grade there were only 3 groups I think in a class of 22.

Because every child in (certain parts of) MCPS is above average. As the OP said.

OP, is it possible that the school put all of the brilliant outliers in the grade into one class? Or maybe they are optimists when they assign reading levels?

I believe T is the target for the second half of 4th grade..so the higher groups are likely on the 5th grade level not middle school. I would not worry (and I don't think you are) at all since your child is still a full year ahead of expectations. My struggling reader was at grade level and that was usually the lowest group.

Wow. That is not the case at our school. In fact, I think that they typically make the highest reading group in 3rd grade the largest so anyone at P or above or so is in the highest group.

My third grader reads at level T which I always thought made her a strong reader. After volunteering in class yesterday I found out that she is in the middle (3rd from the top) reading group. I would have understood that there were a few brilliant outliers in every class - but 2 reading groups worth of kids reading middle school level books? MCPS is truly Lake Woebegone
