My child finds the meals small but is able to order a double deal : 2 entrees. Whenever I am there he eats it all. He is very active and burns it off.

I have lunch with my kids at school on average two days per week. There is no way I would call the meals HUGE. I can see how a kid, even a first grader, with a good appetite could still honestly be hungry.

My 6th grader was buying TWO lunches - called it double down, or something like that. It was between $4.50-$5.65 on some days for the double lunch and a pretzel. We had a talk about buying one lunch and bringing extra food if he's hungry, so that's what he's doing now. He's an active kid, and he still comes home hungry every day.

Size is plenty for a average 1st grader, Too small by half for a 6th grader.

9:23 is right though, a lot of it is stuff no kid will eat without someone nannying them and it ends up in the trash.

I don't think the lunches are big at all. I can't believe anyone would call them huge.

Thanks for the input. I am sure he is not eating everything and prefers the sides instead. We will start packing lunches more and I will look into limiting his account.

I think the lunches are really big... but my kids are not large children. I saw their taco lunch one day and as an adult, it looked very filling. Unfortunately, a huge percentage of the lunch goes into the dumpster every day. Kids, in general, are not eating 1/2 of what is on their plates.

I have a hard time believing that a 1st grader is going hungry IF he is actually eating the lunch. Maybe he just eats the sides? or just the main dish?

PS..PP again. We enventually just stopped buying since it was a pain to be both packing extras and buying.

My super hungry slim son found them small even in first grade. I sent in extra fruit, yogurt or other healthy option from home rather than having him buy desserts. My son was eating the entire meal too. He loves veggies and will eat almost anything when he is hungry. Some kids might skip parts and then end up witha small meal.

They are small but not for a first grader - more like 4-6th grades and the kids are often hungry for more. Sounds like you need to drop by and make sure they mark "lunches only" on his account. Also write that in the memo line of your future checks to the cafeteria.

You can set up his account so he can only buy lunch and no extras.

Your kid is playing you. You'd know that if you were volunteering instead of asking random strangers to.

My son loves buying lunch and has recently discovered the add-ons. He told me he is hungry and needs more. We talk about healthy choices, but I suspect he likes the freedom of selecting chocolate milk and cookies without his parents around. More than once he said he dropped his cobbler and had to buy a second. He's in 1st grade. If you have ever volunterred during lunch, are the lunches small? Do they let them buy anything they want? We have started packing a lunch some days.
