Any article of clothing for WVU should be banned, if it isn't already.

Is anyone even following the dress code? Girls are not supposed to wear certain revealing clothes but they are regularly flouting rules.

I would actually be very happy if there MCPS had school uniforms.

Gun-loathing DC suburbanite here, with WVU connections. By all means, let your kid wear the shirt to school! Yeah, I don't actually know the answer to you question.

The teacher won't want to be responsible for deciding. Just have her wear it and not call attention to it. Most likely no one will say anything, but have her have an extra shirt in backpack just in case.

The WVa mascot is holding a gun, but not pointing a gun. I think you will be fine unless the school has a zero tolerance policy. Check with the teacher.

At my kid's MS it does not seem to be enforced at all..

OP here - thanks for the quick replies.

She has other WVU clothing but that shirt is long sleeve and particularly comfortable.

I thought it was sort of a silly concern on her part but based on the early replies it looks like some people might consider it inappropriate and that it is safer to just not go there - so she will wear something else.

(p.s. just fyi - I was very careful to not suggest to DD that I thought it was a silly concern - but I had hoped I could allay her concerns by pointing to a written policy.)
OP, you need to contact the teacher and ask if it is ok. Regardless of what the policy says, it is the teacher who will be enforcing it. Or check with the principle. I would think it would be fine.
If you violated dress code in my kids' MS, you would have the option of wearing your coat all day over the shirt, turning the shirt inside out or having your parents bring you a new one. They take the dress code very seriously.

The only county-wide dress code information I could find was available here: http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/parents/basics/schoolbasics/#8

Your DC's individual school might have a more detailed policy which should be in the handbook or you can probably find it by googling " [school name] montgomery county md dress code".

If you're still concerned, have your DC ask at the office, or you can call the school and ask directly.
I am specifically looking for the wording re wearing shirts with graphics depicting weapons.

Background: Red Ribbon week is coming up an our child's elementary school. One of the days is "College Day" where the children are asked to wear college logo type clothes. DD says she can't wear her favorite West Virginia University shirt to school because it has a gun on it. (The WVU mascot is the Mountaineer who is often depicted holding a musket.)

Given that the gun in question is part of the logo of a local university, I can't see how the shirt would be included in prohibited attire - but I can't find the specific policy.

TIA
Sounds like a good opportunity to buy a shirt w/ the flying WV on it. Honestly I'd think it would be OK, but you never know. Schools can be very particular.

At our school it's in the parent handbook which is on the school website. Not sure if there is a county wide one. Probably the best bet is to find a shirt without the mascot on it, or bring the mascot shirt to the office for clearance before she wears it.
