OP here. I subbed low fat milk for the water (1%), added some walnuts, and sprinkled coconut palm sugar on top of each one before I put them in the oven. I tried one (they are for tomorrow morning) and they turned out pretty good!

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Add a slice of bacon to each one.

If you did all of this, wouldn't it make the muffins way too sweet?

Add a little orange or lemon zest. Sprinkle sugar on top.

Use milk instead of water. This is a good tip for any boxed mix. If you have 2% or whole milk, the texture gets a lot moister.

Thank you. Don't have any OJ in the house... do you think apple cider would work?

Sprinkle sugar on top before baking. Tada!

Or make some sort of streusel, but that's more work.

I have a boxed muffin mix (cranberry orange muffins) and the add in ingredients only include one egg and water. I want to make them better. And no, I'm not going to bake them from scratch to make them "better." That's not an option right now. I was going to throw in a handful of walnuts, and I wanted to add a little butter or oil... but how much?

TIA
