Both my father and I are old fathers. He never played with me. No sport together. And he was so strict that I dared not speak to him. Because of this, I always make time to play with my kids, I am strict but know that I have to make them happy too.

From what they told me, they love me.

I think it is selfish and gross. My dad was 50 when I was born. We had 8 kids in the family. My dad was 42 when my first sibling was born. I say tie it up if you don't use it young. You don't want a dad who is so old when you're a kid. People are fooling themselves if they think it is ok.

This is a good attitude.

DH was 44 and 49 when his children were born.
He never thinks of his age, and wants another kid now, at 53.

We are not having another child.

And I agree with PP above - it's better to have had a great father for a short time than a lousy one for a long time.

All of which goes to show that being a good father during the time you have is better than being a bad one for longer.

My grandfather had my dad when he was 50 and his wife was 42. Dad was a oops baby, the youngest of five and his siblings were already adults when he was born. His father was killed when my dad was 8 when war broke out.

My dad is still glad that he was born even if his father was old.

Yes, but for every story like this, there is my story. My dad had me when he was 42. I am now 50 and he is 92 and in very good health -- excellent, actually, considering his age.

Average life expectancy for men is about 79/80.
It's wonderful you still have your dad but men making it past 90 is not that common.

My father had me at 21. He died before I turned 29. You have a father, stopped whining about things you cannot change.

My dad was 45 when I was born. He died at 76 of Leukemia. Up until then he was very healthy but the disease took his life within 2 years.
I was 31 when he died. I had kids young and if I would've waited my kids would've never met my parents. My mother died 7 years later.

I'm in nearly the same age situation with two children. I sometimes think it is unusual, which it is, but it does not bother me.

OP, my DH is a comperable age, with children similarly aged. I think he feels fine about it. But why don't you try asking kids how they feel about having an older dad?

I'm 52. I was 40 when my oldest child was born and 46 when my youngest (of three) was born. In the beginning I was self-conscious about it but now, hey, it is what it is.
