I make it a point to try new shoes inside on carpet for a few hours to test how comfortable they are. Are your shoes tight and uncomfortable, or are they hurting your arches or the balls of your feet? If they're just tight, try wearing them with thin socks around the house for a bit to stretch them out. But you can't return them at this point since they've been worn outside.

OP here. I have to use a work laptop so my bag is already so ridiculously stuffed, between my laptop, power cord, lunch, etc. I've been in the habit of wearing comfortable shoes and changing at work but I was hoping to find a way to lighten my load and get shoes that were comfortable enough to wear to work. The discomfort is at my toes. They're very pinched, and the footbed is so much stiffer than I realized as well. It sounds like it'll be a losing battle to return them so I will wear them with thick socks and see if that works but not feeling too optimistic. Thanks everyone for your input! I think wearing them on carpet though may be misleading. I think they were so comfortable at the store exactly because I was trying them on carpet. Walking in them on hard sidewalk was a very different experience. I was in such a rush this morning getting my kids up and out the door that the thought of putting on different shoes was the furthest thing from my mind, even though I could already feel like they may not work out. Feeling very silly now.

I was the PP that said they will take them back. I'm telling you, if you just bought them on Sunday and you take them back this week, you should not have a problem (as long as you have the receipt).

OP here. I will try to take them back tomorrow. Worst that happens is they say no. Anybody want a pair of size 8.5 naturalizer bootie-style heels, black, barely worn?

The soft, squishy interior of "comfort" shoes can feel great initially, but if they don't provide enough support - like many don't, they will make you miserable.

this reminds me of the 80's with all the ladies wearing sneakers with their power suits and brief cases.

OP again: should've noted: I have to bring my laptop home every night since we use a hoteling office system.

I don't own any comfortable heels and have a 5+ minute walk uphill from the metro (and downhill going home, which is also very painful in uncomfortable shoes) to work, so I jumped at these. I am wearing them today and HOLY CRAP they are SOOOOOOOO uncomfortable. Like, I was practically crying by the time I got to work. I am contemplating going home barefoot, they're so uncomfortable. I cannot keep these shoes but I am worried that DSW won't take them back b/c they'll obviously be worn. Any advice? BTW, what is up with naturalizer being uncomfortable? Isn't this the company that had those commercials in the 80s that had two women's basketball teams playing in their heels?

I have purchases many pairs of shoes at DSW. They will take them back. The aren't Nordstroms, you need to return them as soon as possible and make sure you have the receipt. Return them to the original store of purchase.

If you return them quickly you should not have a problem.

Why don't you get a pair of shoes to commute in instead of wearing your heels on the metro?

I think DSW gets a lot of stuff made specifically for them. I have tried to price compare when I see shoes there, and they often never show up anywhere else besides DSW. So their Naturalizer brand might somehow be lower quality than the Naturalizer you buy at another store.

OP, I feel your pain, no pun intended.
It really sucks, but I am pretty sure they will not take them back. It is totally worth taking them in, however.
They need to know what the quality is, or lack thereof, of the merchandise they sell. Who knows, you may get a sympathetic manager if you plead your case well. If the strap had broken, you could've returned them....

Is it possible you just need to wear them a bit more so they can get broken in?
