My 4th grader can recite multiplication math facts to 12.

I could do that in third grade waaay back in the day. And, I'm pretty sure that most of the kids in my class could do that, too.

Singapore works well to help kids meet the CC standards. Just like there were many different curricula used to teach to the old standards, there are many ways to teach to the new standards.

This can all be avoided if they have a textbook. I second the singapore math suggestions.

Bit of an exaggeration. My 4th grader can recite multiplication math facts to 12. DC learned that in 3rd grade in school. And actually, DC can probably explain some math concepts better than some adults can, who learned math the old rote way.

Not saying CC math doesn't have issues, but I don't think it's going to make them dummies.

Common Core math is going to make our kids dummies. This will be the lost generation because of this failed experiment.

Really? I've seen some of the workbooks, and it looks very much like 2.0 math. Also, there have been several posts on DCUM that has stated as much.

I actually really like it: The base tens method, expanding the numbers, writing the numbers out in words, etc.

I wish I was taught math this way instead of the rote calculation method and I was a star math student. It gives my second grader a better understanding of math and numbers. He really likes it too. It's easy and fun.

It's hard without knowing what they are looking for. My then 2nd (or was it 3rd) grade math teacher sent home a "strategies guide" for parents which shows the different strategies the kids are working on, and how to do them. Ask the teacher for one.

Hey, I'm sure you're not alone. There was a problem on my third graders math homework that couldn't even be solved. There was no possible answer. How is that helping anyone learn math? It's no wonder math is so frustrating to kids. Look at how it's being taught!!!

How pathetic am I...I helped 2nd grade DD with her homework last week. It came home today marked wrong...i felt like a dummy.
