There are other options for your DC, but for some of us, it is our reality- or at least a real probability. Not all children mature at the same rate and not all children are capable of reaching relative independence.

I had almost the same dream last year, seriously, and we pushed and pushed for him to have at least two safeties on his list. Fast forward, he's now very happy at an ivy. Relax -- as long as you have a good range of schools on the list, you should sleep better.
