You aren't going to necessary know special needs kids by them being in a lunch bunch. My child is special needs, gets pull outs and is not in a lunch bunch.

Might not necessarily be a 504 or IEP or whether a kid is advanced or not.

DS is in 1st grade but reading on 3rd grade reading and just scored 99% on math (MAP-P?) test. He gets pulled out sometimes along with the other kids who are not necessarily advanced. Some kids need quiet time to do work and sometimes the special ed teacher provides them with this service when the teacher is busy giving assessment.

Could be for Esol?

I volunteered regularly in DD's classroom last year.

The kids who were pulled out once a week were pulled out for extra help. The school has a reading specialist and a math specialist. They provided extra help to the K students who needed it.

Good for you for volunteering, OP! It's such a great experience, IMO. You'll get to know the other kids your DC is spending all this time with. You'll get to know what's going on in your kid's class. You'll get to know other people around the school.

Not sure why people are saying MYOB. There's nothing wrong with wanting to know what is offered at your school and whether your kid would benefit from it.

I think it was just a way of getting the kids together. Some of the parents know eachother and requested it. There is a very active special needs parents group at our school.

Every kid with an IEP gets the same lunch bunch? That doesn't mesh with the "individualized" part of IEP.

I thought this would be about kindergarten students having sex and using unreliable methods of birth control.

You can't assume you know what's going on and even if you asked the teacher, (s)he probably wouldn't tell you if it's selective for certain students. For all you know, every kid in the class gets a chance to be in the group. Maybe those kids were just Monday's group.

They could be going with a reading specialist. It doesn't mean those kids need help. Reading specialists are used in a lot of grades to reduce the load on the teachers for reading groups. They did this in my DC's 2nd grade class. Again, those kids are not necessarily special ed kids, lowest or highest reading groups. The teacher told me they were chosen at random.

I was volunteering today and noticed that four kids from DC's K class go pulled out during writing time. They went with a different teacher I had never seen before and got to complete the assignment with her. They seemed used to this so I assume they are going regularly. That left about 22 kids with the homeroom teacher.

Where were they going? I thought they didn't do pullouts in K? How are the kids for this selected? The kids who were going are among the more advanced and well behaved in the class but there were definitely some more advanced kids who stayed in the main classroom. Why aren't parents told about these types of things?

Yes, I should have asked the teacher but DC is not really in the advanced group and I don't want to give the teacher the wrong impression that we believe she belongs there. DD's having enough trouble keeping up and IMHO the pullouts would be more useful for the kids that are kind of behind. This is a well-performing school so DD would probably be okay at a different school but here she's just kind of average.
