I vote yes, Besta. I've had a long wall of Besta storage cabinets in my family room for 4 years. We recently remodeled and I reconfigured the Besta. I like it.
My kids are in early elementary -- they play hard -- they hide in the larger cabinets when they play hide and seek -- they've turned the extra shelves into forts and slides (that's against the rules, but it didn't stop them) -- the cabinets (and shelves) have held up fine. All their toys are stored here, also arts & crafts supplies, some books, costumes, puzzles, games -- they hold a lot. I've applied and then peeled off labelmaker labels several times, no damage.
I used the Stuva doors, btw, because they have rounded corners. Stuva is just deeper Besta.
Avoid the hardware that's supposed to make the doors open by pushing, without handles. Avoid the sliding door hardware. Avoid the handles that are supposed to clip onto the frames of the all-glass doors. Stick with ordinary doors and hinges. They work great.
The only other thing I'd consider for this purpose is built-ins; seriously, no one wants to inherit a long wall worth of freestanding storage furniture, no matter how high the quality.

I'm in need of storage for a long wall in my family room and have been looking at the Ikea Besta components to put together a combination of tall and low cabinets with doors along and need something that is deeper than a typical 11" deep bookshelf. My only concern is that it looks like the finishes they offer are a foil finish and I don't know how that will stand up over time with kids. Does anyone have Besta components and are you happy with the quality?
Does anyone have any other resources for deep storage cabinets that won't break the bank?
