My wife wanted to get room and board for $$$$$, I convinced her to look at ikea. We got a Malm bed, bedside malm table, lamp, malm dresser and some other stuff for something like $600.
It's been there for YEARS now and totally fine. If it gets dinged or something I don't care.
We also have two malm beds in our beach house for the adults - both have held up well. They are about 10 years old and one of them has started to have some peeling of the melamine on the side from the salty ocean air (it literally faces the ocean 50 ft away).
Ikea makes a lot of crap stuff, but a few things are actually pretty decent. Just remember that the bed slats are separate from the malm when you buy it...
