It matters if you add another hole for the hardware so that you have to have hardware with two screws rather than one... a certain choice now can limit choices in the future.

Does it really matter if it looks dated in a few years? Cabinet hardware is relatively cheap and easy to switch out-so I'd just go with whatever you like right now. If it feels passé in a few years you can update it then.

I am considering having cabinets painted white (they are orangy oak now). Counters are black/brown granite -- nothing special. Back splash is some kind of tile in beige/off white tones -- not shiney. Your basic boring kitchen... so yes, painting the cabinets white is an upgrade.

Now, for the question -- what kind of knobs would be good? Currently we have circular silver/nickle colored knobs. I've seen the verticle pulls (thin bar with two screws attaching to the cabinet)... they seem contemporary, but will they look dated in a few years?

What would you suggest to make just a little statement of being fresh and classic, but not trendy?
