Largely agree with the above chart. You also have to factor in the fact that the DC area is high cost of living and high income, so the AHTI ranges are skewed even higher. This is why the high HHI earners pulling in 400k/500k are complaining that they are not really rich, merely upper middle class, as corroborated by this chart.

I think the income depends on where you live, but around here, I would say you need at least $80K to live a solid middle class lifestyles. Anything above $150K is upper/middle, and above $250K is upper.
Don't confuse "middle" class with being able to afford nice cars and flying vacations. That is above middle class. I think people's definition of middle class is quite skewed.

Middle class- 40-200k. Savings, can afford basics and a middle class lifestyle.
