Subject: Get carpet or pay for hardwood for Master Bedroom?
If the floors are ok looking in the rest of the house, buy a refinishing product from the hardware store. Wash the floors with Murphy's Oil soap and then apply the product as directed. Not too time-consuming and much, MUCH cheaper than $5,500. Then you can finish the master bedroom in hardwood.

Hardwood now and the rest later since it will be much harder to do this type of job once you are living in.
I would definitely do hardwood throughout because that is a huge for re-sale. You can put a nice, thick rug under the bed to make it cozier.

At what price point is it ok to have carpet throughout most of the house?

If the house is worth more than $1M, I would do hardwood. Carpet is the cheaper option and won't be too big a problem if the house is not high end. Lino in the kitchen makes me think that the house is probably not too high end. Hardwood is a no brainer (people who prefer carpet can add it at little cost). But if finances are tight, you'll get more for your money on other repairs.
Refinishing the whole house is something that really should be done PRIOR to moving in. If the floors aren't too bad, and you have kids and pets -- you may want to forgo the expense.

+1. You don't want to be moving all that furniture and breathing in the varnish vapors after move-in. Get it all done to match now and maybe wait a year on the tile if necessary. And put down a large area rug under the bed so you have the best of both worlds, flooring wise, in the bedroom.

I like carpet in bedrooms & hardwood elsewhere. Just feels cozier.

Subject: Get carpet or pay for hardwood for Master Bedroom?
We just bought a house and our last day to be in our rental is Oct. 31st. We are having the whole house repainted and need to do something about the Master Bedroom. The whole house has hardwood except the kitchen (has linoleum) and the master bedroom has carpet. My DH just ripped up the carpet, the padding and too out the tack strip. An addition was done to increase the size of the master bedroom by 6 to 7 feet. Instead of matching the hardwood, the previous owners put down plywood in the addition and then put in carpet to cover everything. We got a quote from two different hardfloor places - 2200 and 2300 to take out plywood, install 80 square feet of hardwood, and then sand and finish the whole room to match the rest of the house. Both places also quoted around 5,500 to sand all the hardwood floors and re-finish. We don't have tons of money and our priority is removing wall paper and painting (just spent 4,500), new kitchen floor (tile). We are thinking of just putting carpet again and then when we have more money in a few years put in hardwood and re-finish all the floors. What is a good carpet to get for just the master bedroom that is reasonable? We have a 5 and 8 year old who actually like rolling around on carpet and doing gymnastics. Anyone have and pros/cons they would like to share of having carpet vs. hardwood for the master?
